Rheumatology and orthopaedics are sometimes confused. A patient with joint discomfort is frequently referred to an orthopaedic specialist rather than a rheumatologist. What is the distinction?
A rheumatologist is a doctor who specialises in the treatment of arthritis and bone and joint problems. Rheumatologists provide anti-inflammatory and anti-pain medications and keep a careful eye on their patients.
Rheumatologists treat over 100 different kinds of arthritis, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Lupus, Gout, Scleroderma, Back Pain, and Osteoporosis.
As needed, the rheumatologist may inject joints, request blood tests, or send you to a surgeon or physical therapist.
An orthopedist is a doctor who treats patients who need large or small procedures or surgery on their bones and joints, such as hip, knee, or shoulder replacements, disc or back surgeries, tendon repairs, or arthroscopies. In addition to surgery, your Orthopedist may administer joint injections or send you to a Rheumatologist or Physical Therapist.
